What is a Forward Deployed Engineer?

The term comes from Palantir, since adopted by OpenAI and Anthropic. A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) doesn't sit behind a screen taking tickets: they embed directly in the client's context, learn the business, build the solution and ship it to production in their environment. Half engineer, half consultant, accountable end to end.

The forward-deployed model

Embedded in context

An FDE works close to the business and its users, not remotely against frozen specs. They see the real problems and adjust continuously.

Builds AND ships

No handoff between whoever designs and whoever delivers. The FDE does both, all the way to real production.

Accountable for the result

A consultant hands over a report and leaves. An FDE stays accountable for the system actually working, over time.

As a freelancer

A freelancer who embeds, builds and operates the solution IS an FDE. That's exactly how I work with my clients.

The model applied for real

On Camp Boost as on Sillage, I embedded in the client's business context, from scoping through production and iteration, rather than handing over a deliverable and disappearing.

Frequently asked questions

Isn't an FDE just a consultant?

No. A consultant advises and hands over a report. A Forward Deployed Engineer actually builds the software and ships it to production in the client's environment, then stays accountable for it.

Where does the term come from?

From Palantir over ten years ago, now adopted by OpenAI, Anthropic and others to describe engineers who embed with their clients.

Why hire a freelance FDE rather than an agency?

An agency adds layers of intermediaries. A freelance FDE is a single point of contact who understands your business, builds, ships and stays accountable, with no project-management layer.

Is it suitable for a small or mid-sized business?

Yes. Whatever the term: concretely, it's someone who comes to you, automates or builds what you need, and makes sure it runs. In hours saved, not jargon.
